The legacy of a family
with more than 120 years of history.

About Us

At Bodega Nanni, we believe that the inherited knowledge of more than 110 years of family tradition, blended with the latest winemaking techniques, modern technology and respect for the environment, are the three basic foundations for achieving the quality of our wines.

Terroir is made not only of the land and the climate, but also of the people who work the land, their culture, their knowledge and their love for what they do. This is what sets one wine apart from another and makes it unique, giving it its identity. With a long history of four generations producing wines in the Cafayate Valley, we have come to understand our land and its needs; our grapes, their right point of ripeness and the precise way of growing them in order to make the best wines. Finally, we have inherited the best way to elaborate our wines so as to obtain a product with our own, unique style.

Family Tradition

In 1885, Pietro Nanni, from Rosciolo, a small town in central Italy, settled in Cafayate. In 1897 he founded a small family winery and in 1905 he bought Chimpa, an 11,000-hectare estate in the privileged Cafayate Valley.

After Pietro's death in 1935, two of his sons, Benjamín and Pedro Nanni, continued their father's legacy. In 1940 they leased for ten years the winery where the Museo de la Vid y el Vino stands today. It was there that they devoted all their effort to modernizing what is now Bodega Nanni, planting new vineyards at Chimpa, east of the Cafayate Valley, El Porvenir, in the center of the valley, and Altamira in Yacochuya, to the west.

In 1959 Benjamín Nanni passed away, and in 1964 the partnership with his brother Pedro was dissolved. The winery remained in the care of Benjamín's widow, Felisa Maróstica de Nanni, who in 1982 transferred the winery and the NANNI brand to her youngest son, José Eduardo. Together with his wife, Zulma Miralpeix, he became fully involved in the winery with an innovative project: making organic wines, taking advantage of the exceptional natural conditions of the San José de Chimpa estate.

Today, José Eduardo Jr., Juan Pablo and Jimena, the fourth generation of the Nanni family, are proud of and committed to the legacy of our grandparents. We feel both the satisfaction and the responsibility of continuing the family tradition, because our products carry much more than wine: they carry our surname, and everyone who came before us. Each bottle of NANNI reflects our knowledge and our greatest effort, in honor of all who were and are part of this: Pietro, Benjamín and Pedro, Felisa, José Eduardo and Zulma, and now us.

Technology

Although it is not known exactly when people first discovered wine, the oldest findings date from 5000 to 6000 B.C., so it is likely the world's most ancient fermented beverage.

The essence of winemaking remains what it has always been, fermented grape juice, but modern discoveries have given us a deeper understanding of the microbiology of fermentation and of how a wine evolves over time. This makes it possible to produce wine in a controlled way, according to established standards.

That is why at Bodega Nanni, even as a winery with more than 110 years of history, we have continually added modern equipment: stainless steel tanks, cooling systems, pumps, filters and state-of-the-art bottling lines, as well as a quality-control laboratory with everything needed to study the wines properly.

All of this without setting aside the ancestral knowledge of our grandparents. We are convinced that technology and tradition work together, and that this combination makes a unique product. We believe this is the real difference between a winery and a wine factory.

Organic Certification

"An organic, biological or ecological product is one that comes from a global production system that fosters and enhances the health of agro-ecosystems, including biological diversity, biological cycles and the biological activity of the soil. These systems start from soil fertility, respecting the natural needs and capacities of the plants, and seek to improve the quality of agriculture and the environment in every respect. Organic agriculture greatly reduces the need for external inputs by using neither chemical fertilizers nor pesticides or other synthetic products. Instead, it allows the powerful laws of nature to increase both yields and the resistance of the crops."

This kind of agriculture favors renewable resources and recycling, returning to the soil the nutrients present in residual products. It fosters sustainable production and enriches the environment.

It respects nature's own mechanisms for controlling crop pests and diseases, avoiding pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, growth hormones and antibiotics, as well as genetic manipulation.

From the very beginning at Bodega Nanni, we were convinced not only of the importance of caring for the environment, but also that producing with the most natural methods possible would give us the healthiest grapes of the highest quality. In 1996 we decided to formalize what we were already doing, obtaining FULL ORGANIC certification, issued by SENASA and controlled by Argencert.

Respect for natural processes and for the biodiversity of the soil has become for us not only a production system, but a way of working and of living. Moderate consumption of our products supports health, not only because of the well-known antioxidant properties of wine polyphenols, but also because they are organic and contain no traces of agrochemicals or other synthetic products.

Vineyards

At Bodega Nanni we look after our wines from the very first moment. That is why 100% of the production comes from our own vineyards at the San José de Chimpa estate, 10 km east of the town of Cafayate. San José de Chimpa, about 2,000 hectares in all with 50 hectares planted, is a portion of the Chimpa estate, owned by the family since 1905.

At 1,750 meters above sea level, with sandy-loam, poor, deep soils and an average annual rainfall of 80 mm, our estate is an ideal place to grow grapes.

The scarce rainfall, together with a steady pattern of wind for 12 hours a day throughout the year, allows us to grow extremely healthy grapes without fungicides or pesticides of any kind.

The semi-desert climate, the wide temperature range between day and night, the intense sunlight, the constant winds and the precise amount of water delivered by drip irrigation give us not only healthy, ripe grapes, but also thick-skinned grapes that bring great concentration of color, polyphenols and varietal aromas to our wines.
